October 13, 2016--To highlight the significance of the involvement of the community
in spreading awareness on the importance of screening for early detection of
breast cancer, Ms. Maha Shair offered a gracious grant to the American
University of Beirut Medical Center (AUBMC).
On September 25, Maha Shair ran in the Berlin Marathon in support
of her friend Tamara Qasem who is battling breast cancer. She dedicated the proceedings
of the marathon to the Tamara Qasem Breast Cancer Awareness Fund and all women
fighting cancer.
Ms. Shair commented, “Although the cost of healthcare is
increasing, it should not prevent patients from receiving the best care. That
is why, it is very vital to build a community network that raises awareness and
sets the foundations for several funds that would help needy patients. I am
running for all women who are fighting cancer. We never think cancer could hit
us or hit our loved ones. But it does and for no reason and no explanation.”
Ms. Shair had initiated this campaign after one of her dearest childhood
friends, Tamara, was diagnosed three months ago with breast cancer.
Breast cancer is the most common malignant disease in women and is
the main cause for the death of thousands every year. Data has shown that one
out of nine women die of breast cancer yearly. However, the rate of death can
be decreased by the use of accurate screening on a regular basis. Screening
plays a major role in the prevention and early detection of breast cancer. Early
screening offers women the chance of reducing their risk of dying from breast
cancer.
