Communication Skills for Health Professionals

Several methods of teaching communication skills have been tried. These vary from lectures, observation of students while conducting interviews with simulated or real patients, role-play of specific scenarios, or review of videotaped interviews.

The use of videotaped material has become an integral component of many medical training programs. Medical learners may describe feeling threatened by the perceived intrusion of the video camera or worry about “making fools of themselves.” Introducing the learners to role-play interviews or consultations done by others may allow the learner to overcome this barrier. Audiovisual materials are more effective as a teaching tool when they are culturally relevant.

The Communication Skills Working Team was founded to produce culturally relevant audiovisual teaching material in Arabic. This website describes our work.
