Electroconvulsive therapy (ECT)
Electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) is a procedure performed under general anesthesia. ECT uses very short electric pulses to stimulate the brain. It is indicated for depression (moderate to severe) and can be used for other psychiatric disorders if recommended by a specialized psychiatrist. Prior to ECT you will need a clinical evaluation by one of our doctors and basic medical clearance (Blood tests, ECG, chest Xray ) maybe required. ECT is a course of treatment that can range from 7 to 12 sessions as determined by your treating physician. ECT can be performed on an inpatient or outpatient basis.
Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS)
TMS is a new therapy in mental health treatment, the primary use of TMS is for depression but it can be used for other conditions if clinically indicated.
TMS is a non-invasive procedure, that does not require sedation. TMS uses magnetic energy to stimulate the brain to improve symptoms of depression. TMS is indicated for patients not responding to traditional psychiatric treatments. TMS is performed as an outpatient procedure, sessions are daily and treatment may extend from 1 to 4 weeks as clinically indicated by your doctor.
