The American University of Beirut Medical Center (AUBMC) recognizes the significance of learning and career development in the progress of the institution.
The Learning & Development Unit is an entity within the Medical Center's Human Resources Department whose objectives are aligned towards enhancing employee's professional development, widening the scope of employee's competence, improving employee performance, ensuring satisfaction and motivation, and consequently increasing productivity.
The Learning & Development Unit offers a wide variety of activities, namely:
Soft skills training, English courses, mandatory training, online learning, staff attitude on-the-job project, new employee orientation, manager's HR orientation, development plans, training needs analysis, etc
Our Services
Development plans are yearly (and on-need) improvement plans initiated by direct managers and the HR Learning & Development Team.
These plans aim to nurture employees' soft and technical skills and ensure professional and standardized enhancements across the institution.
Development plans consist of measurable goals with specific time frames and success measures.
All goals are linked to the employee's competencies, standards, or performance goals as per his/her job description or career ladder.
Development plans also support the employee's growth and progress by focusing on areas that are crucial to his/ her tasks and duties.
The Learning & Development Team strongly believes in ever-evolving learning; therefore, we strive to ensure that all employees at AUBMC have personalized development plans.
Soft skills are the different attributes and interpersonal skills which describe an individual's relationships and interactions with others. Soft skills are also known as people skills; they complement hard skills (or technical skills) to improve an employee's performance.
The Learning & Development Team offers a variety of soft skills courses interlinked to the core and general competencies. The training catalog includes but is not limited to; Leadership Skills, Supervisory Skills, Customer Service, Time Management, Teamwork, Problem Solving, Anger Management, Business Writing, Writing Reports and Motivating Your Workforce.
AUBMC partnered with LinkedIn Learning to provide an on-demand e-learning solution designed to help employees gain new skills and career advancement.
LinkedIn Learning provides a vast online library of over 250,000 instructional videos covering the latest software, creative, and business skills. Taught by accomplished instructors and recognized industry experts, LinkedIn Learning is a highly engaging resource for employees looking to develop a skill or hobby. Topics include Project Management, Financial Management, Business Analytics, Leadership, Human Resources, Data Science, Software/Web Development, Graphic/Web Design and so much more.
E-learning videos are accessible anytime, anywhere – even offline; via desktop, tablet, and mobile. Moreover, it provides comprehensive learning paths as well as just-in-time, bite-sized content to answer ones' needs to know on the fly.

Technical skills are different skills acquired through learning and practice to perform a specific job or task. They reflect the talent and expertise of an employee.
They can be taught on-the-job or through formal courses offered by internal/external providers.
AUBMC is keen on improving the level of English proficiency for employees who do not meet the minimum requirements set by the corresponding job description; either pre-employment, while being assessed for a different position, or when eligible for a promotion.
AUBMC partnered with the British Council to provide staff with English learning opportunities leading to professional growth and meeting minimum requirements of the job set by the Medial Center and other regulatory and accreditation agencies.
The Learning & Development Team is responsible for coordinating and following up on hospital-wide mandatory professional education sessions, which include:
• Fire and Facility Management Safety Procedures for all AUBMC academic and non-academic staff once every year (Fiscal year is October to September)
• Infection Control for all AUBMC academic and non-academic staff once every other year (Fiscal year is October to September)
• Hazardous Waste Management for all AUBMC academic and non-academic staff (once per employment)
• Resuscitative Training for all academic and non-academic non-nursing staff as per pre-set policy
Staff Attitude is a combined effort between the Human Resources (Learning & Development and Performance Management units) and Patient Affairs departments to enhance the overall patient experience at AUBMC.
The project entails all departments at AUBMC; it involves delivering workshops, conducting on the job observations, running meetings, performing on-the-job trainings and discussing service standards.
The core dimensions the project revolves around are: Respect, Client Focus, Professionalism, Business Ethics, and Teamwork.
The Learning & Development Team offers a quarterly hospital-wide orientation to ensure a smooth integration of the newly appointed staff into the AUBMC corporate culture and to ensure familiarity with the most important rules and regulations of the organization.
