Your First Visit

Your first appointment is a consultation, not a treatment. You will meet a radiation oncologist — a doctor who specializes in treating cancer with radiation. The doctor will review your records, examine you, and explain whether radiation therapy may help you.

You will have time to ask questions. Together, you and your doctor will talk about the goals of treatment, the possible side effects, and the next steps. Nothing is decided without you.

What to bring

Bringing the right papers helps your team plan your care without delay. Try to have these ready:

  • Pathology report (your biopsy or surgery results)
  • Imaging reports and CDs or uploaded images (CT, MRI, PET)
  • Operative reports, if you have had surgery
  • Records of any radiation therapy you had before
  • A full list of your medicines and doses, including vitamins and supplements
  • Insurance and financial documents
  • A written list of questions you want to ask

Tip: bring a family member or friend. A second person can listen, take notes, and support you.

Questions you may want to ask

There are no wrong questions. Examples many patients find helpful:

  • What is the goal of radiation therapy in my case?
  • How many treatment sessions will I need, and how long does each one take?
  • What side effects should I expect, and how will you help me manage them?
  • Can I keep working or driving during treatment?
  • Who do I call if I feel unwell between visits?

Tell your team before treatment planning

  • Pregnancy: tell the team right away if you are pregnant or could be pregnant.
  • Implanted devices: tell the team if you have a pacemaker, defibrillator, or any other implanted device.
  • Previous radiation: tell the team about any radiation treatment you had before, anywhere in the world.
