Osama Mohamad, MD Interim Chairperson Department of Radiation Oncology

Radiation oncology stands at the intersection of precision and humanity. It can cure cancer, control its growth, and ease suffering. Yet the science is only part of the story. A cancer diagnosis changes everything — and we understand that walking through our doors takes courage. Our commitment to you is straightforward: you will be seen, heard, and cared for with the same attention and honesty we would want for our own family.

We are building a department organized around deep expertise — subspecialized teams who know their disease sites well, hold themselves to shared standards, and keep improving by learning from every patient we treat. Here, no single person carries your care alone. Behind every treatment plan is a team — physicians, physicists, therapists, and nurses — working together with specialists across medical oncology, surgery, radiology, pathology, and supportive care. What that means for you, in practice, is simple: your case is reviewed together, decisions are aligned, and the plan is coordinated. Just as importantly, we work to make your care easier to navigate, with clearer and more standardized pathways from consultation to treatment and fewer delays when time matters.

AUBMC carries a special responsibility in Lebanon. We take that seriously — not as an abstract obligation, but as a daily practice, patient by patient. Our department is home to several unique programs that reflect that role: Lebanon's only ACGME-I–accredited Radiation Oncology residency program, the country's only brachytherapy program, the only medical physics residency, the only radiation biology program, and the only adaptive radiotherapy platform (Ethos). Together, these efforts reflect a broader vision: bringing advanced technologies to our communities, training the next generation of clinicians, physicists, and scientists, expanding access to high-quality radiation therapy across the country and region, and building research programs that improve outcomes and patient experience.

Whether you are a patient seeking answers, a trainee looking for a place to grow, or a colleague hoping to build something meaningful together, we are glad you found us.

About Us

Our Mission
Our mission is to provide our patients with the best quality radiation treatment, based on the latest medical and scientific evidence, using state-of-the-art radiotherapy technologies.
Overview
Radiation therapy is a major modality in cancer management. The department includes clinical, research, and educational components.
Clinical
We participate in local and international meetings and ensure safe, up-to-date clinical practice through continuous education and audits.
Research
Our research includes clinical and basic science projects supported by grants and international collaborations.
Education
We train residents, students, and physics graduates in a structured academic environment.

Services

Three-dimensional conformal radiotherapy (3DCRT)
3DCRT is a linear-accelerator-based radiotherapy treatment modality that allows accurate dose coverage in all three spatial dimensions of the target using MRI, CT, and PET imaging.
Image-guided radiation therapy (IGRT)
IGRT allows accurate patient positioning immediately before treatment using on-board kilovoltage cone beam CT (CBCT).
Intensity-modulated radiation therapy (IMRT)
IMRT enables delivery of different dose prescriptions within the same target volume and allows highly precise dose shaping to improve treatment accuracy.
Stereotactic radiosurgery (SRS)
SRS delivers highly precise radiation in a single session using rigid immobilization and a fixed reference frame, allowing high-dose treatment with minimal target margins.
Stereotactic radiation therapy (SRT)
SRT uses precise immobilization and reference systems to reduce radiation to surrounding organs. Treatment is typically delivered over multiple sessions.
Gated stereotactic body radiation therapy (SBRT)
SBRT accounts for tumor motion due to breathing and delivers highly precise radiation over a few sessions, typically for lung, liver, or spine lesions.
Total body irradiation (TBI)
TBI is a linear-accelerator-based technique where the entire body is irradiated during each treatment session, often used in conditioning regimens.
Three-dimensional brachytherapy
This technique places radiation sources inside the body (intracavitary, intraluminal, or interstitial) using 3D imaging for accurate dose delivery.
In-vivo dose monitoring
A method of measuring radiation dose inside the patient in real time during treatment to ensure accuracy and safety.
