Early beginnings play a crucial role in shaping the health and developmental trajectory of small and sick newborns. The first weeks and months after birth lay the foundation for a lifetime, as this period is critical for brain growth and development. Providing timely, supportive, and developmentally appropriate care during this sensitive stage promotes optimal outcomes and strengthens the path toward healthy futures.
Established in 2013, the
Developmental Care and Early Intervention Program (DCEIP) is dedicated to providing individualized, family-centered care in the
Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) and beyond, through the
Neonatology Continuity and Follow-up Clinic (NCFC).
In the NICU, we follow the
Neonatal Individualized Developmental Care and Assessment Program (NIDCAP) model. NIDCAP professionals provide individualized care through regular observations and tailored recommendations to support each infant's development. They also guide NICU staff in fostering a nurturing and responsive care environment and support families in promoting parent engagement and sensitive caregiving.
Through the
NCFC, we ensure continuity of care with close attention to the potential risks faced by small and sick newborns, including growth restriction, developmental delays, and sensory deficits. A multidisciplinary approach is used to monitor growth and development and to provide early intervention. Assessments cover growth, nutrition, vision, neurodevelopment, cognition, and behavior. Families receive personalized guidance and referrals to help infants reach their full developmental potential.
We are proud of the collaborative and compassionate approach our team brings to every stage of care. Thank you for your interest in our efforts to help infants achieve their full potential and enjoy healthier long-term outcomes.
